Hair-restoring ingredient CTP

R & D report Hair-restoring ingredient CTP 6-benzylaminopurine
We, Sansho Seiyaku, have been committed to the research and development of ingredients for over 50 years since the foundation in 1960. In this report, we present you one of the highly evaluated ingredients we developed.

Evidence: Hair-restoring effect of CTP (6-benzylaminopurine)

The Ingredient Sansho Seiyaku discovered from about 500 materials.
CTP, 6-benzylaminopurine, is an ingredient known to enhance cellular activity of plants and used widely in agriculture. For example, it is used to increase fruit set in apples and promote orchid blooms. In 1990, researchers of Sansho Seiyaku unexpectedly found the ingredient having hair restoring effect from about 500 materials when they were doing a research on gray hair. Then they ascertained that it directly stimulates proliferation of hair matrix cells and promotes hair growth as it promotes plant growth. They started to develop it in order to formulate in hair-restoring essence. And in 1995, CTP was approved as an active ingredient by the former Ministry of Health and Welfare.
CTP is highly evaluated for its efficacy on female pattern hair loss or thinning hair and is used as an active ingredient in many hair-restoring products.
CTP, 6-benzylaminopurine, has been used to treat hair loss over 20 years since its approval in 1995. Up until several years ago, hair loss and thinning hair were said to be problems unique to men. But recently, they became problems to women as well. Many women are afflicted with reduction in hair volume and exposed scalp caused by hair loss or thinning hair. And CTP, 6-benzylaminopurine, has been used to treat them. It is clinically proved that using CTP containing product continuously prevents hair loss and promotes growth of stronger, thicker and healthier hair. Therefore it is used in many hair-restoring products.

Mechanism of action: Treatment of thinning hair and hair loss unique to women

  • Female hormone levels

    The key is female hormone.
The diameter of each hair gradually decreases around age 30, which is closely related to decrease in hormone levels. Regulating hair growth is one of the many different roles female hormones have. After giving birth or menopause, hormone levels decrease and it leads to decrease in production of BMP: a protein acts as a hair growth promoting signal. As a result, strong hair would not grow, each hair becomes thinner and hair loss and thinning hair progress.
  • Promoting production of BMP, the decrease of which is closely related to the decrease in hormone levels.
In hair bulb, hair matrix cells which generate new hair shafts exist. BMP usually stimulates proliferation of hair matrix cells thus promotes hair growth. But the amount of BMP decreases as you age and hair growth stagnates, which leads to hair loss and thinning hair. The hair-restoring ingredient, CTP, promotes BMP production and prevent hair loss. Promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss concurrently, CTP makes hair stronger and thicker.

From the laboratory The ingredient for women

Ingredient development department Kazuhiro Iga

The pattern of hair loss in women differs from that in men.
In men, receding hair line and / or hair thinning on the crown occurs because of the disruption of hair cycle. But in women, because of hormonal imbalance, hair density decreases, each hair becomes thinner and the hair volume is reduced. CTP directly works against female pattern hair loss and is highly effective.

  • BMP production

Study 1 Promoting production of BMP, a protein acts as a hair growth promoting signal.
Stimulate proliferation of hair matrix cells which generate new hair shafts.
BMP, a protein acts as a hair growth signal, is produced in dermal papilla cells that exist in hair bulb. By adding CTP to a culture medium of human dermal papilla cells, BMP production increased to 135%. As the BMP production increases, the more active hair matrix cells become. Therefore hair growth is promoted.
  • Study 2 Hair growth promotion
Promote growth of thick and strong hair.
Hair growth was measured using cultured hair follicles. Adding CTP in the culture medium promoted hair growth and each hair grew faster and thicker.
  • Survey Efficacy of hair-restoring essence containing CTP.
80 % of the participants reported decrease in hair loss.
697 participants who have hair problems used CTP hair-restoring essence for about 8 months. 82 % of the participants reported that the number of fallen hairs decreased and 80 % of the participants reported that each hair became stronger. Many experienced significant hair growth using CTP hair-restoring essence.
